I’ve been having discussions with several people recently about the role of the CTO (Chief Technology Officer) in very early stage companies. In December 2007, I described how I commonly take on an Acting CTO Role in a Start-up. Rather they should get a part-time Acting CTO who can help close the gap.

I seem to encounter a lot of people who want to attach a CTO label to me as I'm the only programmer on the founding team of three. While I do fill that role at the moment, I'm a little hesitant to refer to myself as a CTO as we still haven't launched a product, acquired a single user, or turned or a penny in profit.

You can be an entrepreneur and at the same time you can be a mentor or an investor to someone else’s project. Entrepreneurs who have a startup upload their company’s information and create a startup page. When I first talked with TZ, it was pretty much me just working on the platform and I had outsourced the development to a firm.

August was a slow month in terms of traffic and I was away for a lot of the month, but there were some really great posts at the intersection of startups, technology, product and being a Startup CTO. On the other hand, I meet plenty of people who complain bitterly about corporate politics—sometimes even in the companies they run.
