But equally some partners joined firms in 2000 and have still never seed any upside in cash since their funds haven’t yet returned the initial capital [note: VC funds usually return all of the capital that they raised first and then share 20% of the profits above this hurdle]. We’re going to start aggressively spend money on marketing our product. I have long tried to raise awareness of the trade-off between growth & profits as outlined in this much read blog post on the topic (and please forward to your favorite journalist who often simply report that companies that aren’t profitable are bad).

Based on the final report for 2012 from Thomson Reuters and the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA), it may appear that IPOs are back as a viable startup exit strategy. Sure, there will always some seed funding (10% of overall deal flow), but you can bet that this money goes to entrepreneurs who have been there before and won.

I just read the Q1 2011 report from CB Insights , which shows venture capital is back. billion jump in funding over the same quarter of 2010 with a similar number of deals, so it clearly shows a trend to larger deal sizes for fewer startups. Overall, investors put $7.5 billion to work across 738 financing deals with U.S.

There was no viral social networking products back then like Twitter where people could easily discover your content. So far at the company I have raised seed funds of $500,000 of which $470,000 is still in the bank so I’m in pretty good shape. Free product. Page 3: Competition. I start in with the product.

The most recent report to weigh in on the troubles of the industry was produced by the esteemed Kauffman Foundation. This has led to the creation of incubators, accelerators and seed funds. It doesn’t seem too irrational for seed or A deals, just a bit higher than the norm. Thank you, Aaron Sorkin! The Exit Problem.
