I’ve been having discussions with several people recently about the role of the CTO (Chief Technology Officer) in very early stage companies. In December 2007, I described how I commonly take on an Acting CTO Role in a Start-up. I used an image from Roger Smith that describes the varying roles of a CTO as the company matures.

He had an idea for a startup that would help consumers better book service jobs and would take on Service Magic, which he believed had a business model that could be disrupted. I acted as the occasional mentor, advisor and coach to Ethan. So there you have it. The company was called Red Beacon.

Earlier this month, Los Angeles-based LifeCrowd (www.lifecrowd.com) unveiled its service to help connect people with real life activities. Enter the light bulb, which was that this was a real opportunity to create a new platform, which can facilitate connecting experts with users. Tony Adam is an advisor, he was formerly at MySpace.

Southern California has had its share of new startup accelerators launch in the last few months, however, few people here have actually experienced an accelerator firsthand. Plus, he told us a little bit about how he's helping to build a mini cluster of technology companies in the Silverlake area. We have some great mentors now.

We are creating a platform that enables users to play instant games and apps directly on the computer desktop. This is not so much because others are going to try to steal the idea, however, there is simply no upside in broadcasting your strategy to any would-be competitors. How did it help you? We recently sat down with Luc Berlin, co-founder of Miigle, a SoCal startup that has an aggressive global mission to bring entrepreneurs together from around the world. Unless people feel a certain level of appeal towards what you are doing, they are less likely to want to help you. Back then, it was just him following his dream.
