At Silicon Beach Fest Hollywood 2012 Kevin Winston organized a panel called “How to Find and Hire a Developer”. Always have a developer do a test project before hiring them to make sure they deliver quality work. This means selling at least 5-10 customers in advance, before it is even built. Ask for is code samples.

They often make great team members such as head of products, CTO, head of sales, CFO, etc. But when I’m looking to write my check I need to look in the eyes of the captain — the maestro who brings the whole orchestra together. He had built and sold his first company and had good ideas for his second company. Why should I be?

Talk and time are cheap, but they need to understand that investors judge past results as a good indicator of future expectations. Get a real customer and real revenue.
