While you dialed AOL to get on the Internet, the goal of AOL was to keep you locked into their proprietary content and thus earned the classification of “walled garden.&# They had a proprietary browser, their own search engine, their own content, chat rooms, email system, etc. And now they want to revolutionize email.

After I left Yahoo, I spent a couple of years with Forsythe Solutions Group, as a liaison with account executives. There is an advantage and disadvantage to that.

We had email, instant messaging, group calendars, discussion boards, etc. They had a proprietary browser, their own search engine, their own content, chat rooms, email system, etc. But AOL brought online services, email, chat and discussion boards to the masses and thus educated a generation that paved the way for others.
