This is an EC2 test run on a pair of Large instances. Netty , Vert.x , and Java servlets are fast, but we were surprised how much faster they are than Ruby , Django , and friends. Application performance can be directly mapped to hosting dollars, and for a start-up company in its infancy, hosting costs can be a pain point.

Startup Founders really need to see these numbers. I was also surprised by the performance improvement on dedicated hardware as compared to EC2 instances of roughly 10x. Important Implications Well I'm currently working with startup founders on their systems in JRuby, Django, PHP and Java.

A very interesting topic, especially for those of us involved in developing for start-ups. The basic conclusion was that it was a bit premature if you were talking about a serious, funded start-up. Especially when there are things like: Amazon S3 / EC2 / AWS outage this morning. Server and client in Java.
