They started by offering cloud storage (S3) on a super cheap, pay-as-you consume basis. Not Google. The larger ones also do more to hold CEO summits, create recruiting databases, set up email distribution lists, create pools of stock options that can be shared across companies, etc. They came from a different perspective.
