The disadvantage is that you can’t install a lot of additional tools that use Javascript. I started with the hosted version and then migrated to an installed version so I could use Google Analytics and some other products. Much of my traffic is through referring websites and/or social media. You then need a URL.

The problem with most of the share badges out there is that they load a Javascript file from an external source which can take several seconds on a bad day. Javascript calls are an easy way for Facebook and StumbleUpon to put their links on your page but most networks also have a way to share through a URL.
