TED happened because the need to share great ideas and stories about achievement, wonder, and change, happened. It reminds of the Mark Zuckerberg Facebook story.

But the critical distinction in the direction of both companies was that while MySpace was putting up moats to keep outside companies from innovating and making money off their backs, Facebook took the opposite approach.

And so it goes with social networking. But AOL brought online services, email, chat and discussion boards to the masses and thus educated a generation that paved the way for others.
