It was driven by the introduction of open-source software, most notably what was called the LAMP stack. What this meant was that rather than buying really expensive UNIX servers (and multiple machines in order to handle redundancy) we could buy cheap, replaceable servers for compute resources. These are very different.

They also are VERY interesting for background processing tasks that take compute resources or from a storage cloud standpoint. Some other points - LAMP,Net, Java - doesn't make much difference. Especially when there are things like: Amazon S3 / EC2 / AWS outage this morning. Server and client in Java. I would tend to agree.
