We've made some investments here and there, and are now building a team, and making a lot of investments in SoCal tech companies. I had a sales force when I was at SkyPipeline, selling telecom, networking, and broadband wireless products. My CIO had been ex-CIO at Herbalife, and was an EVP of Software for Disney.

They had a prominent NorCal investor already so I thought a SoCal lead would make sense – that I could help them in a more hands-on way. There are other great VC’s in SoCal and there is always the allure of the NorCal guys flying down and talking about how they invested in Google, Facebook, Yahoo! Write things down.

I was working hand-in-hand with my close friend and associate Stuart Lander who was running our UK office and with one of our local sales reps. We helped the write out their requirements for a system. Winning the contract meant that we would hit our quarterly revenue figure and be in good position for our annual sales target.

As I naturally get asked all the time why we invested in Company A or Company B, I thought I’d just put forth my thesis in writing. I’m a software guy so I’m sure there are cases where building isn’t feasible. In SoCal we have Crosscut Ventures, Matt Coffin, Mike Jones, Klaus Schauser, etc. The key to getting money is that the people writing the check trust you. Product : You should build a product or a prototype. It creeps people out.
