In Europe, over fifty percent of all the unicorns that have come out of Europe since 2005 have come from the Nordics. There's also toughter competition, because you're competing with the big boys. How did a fund originally from the Nordics become interested in investing in Los Angeles companies? As a very young VC, we can't do that.

I had early success working in-house with Matt Coffin at LowerMyBills in 2005, and then I was brought on by Yahoo to build out the Yahoo Publisher Network Team. Is this at all competitive with LinkedIn? There are lots of people there doing competitive intelligence, or doing research on an industry or landscape.

There seems to be a lot of competition in this area, not the least being Groupon Now. That was back in 2005, and the premise was that there were lots of sites to help job seekers and employers connect, but they didn't work for a segment of the population, such as dishwashers, busboys, and others who did not have access to the Internet.

If you go back to 2005 and 2006 and look at a company which would have a $5M pre- then, it''s now $8 to $10M, all else equal. They have to be sensitive to competitive dynamics, but, if you are in ad-tech, and WPP or Google is the best buyer for your company, why not spend some time with a VP at Google?

Dialpad was acquired by Yahoo in 2005, and became the voice engine for Yahoo's VoIP services. In 2005/2006, I really saw that the trend was shifting from television to the Internet. There's more competition, but there's a lot more available to you as a developer.
