I first met Ethan in 2005. We generally have a policy to only fund entrepreneurs once the first version of a product has shipped or it near to shipping. So I asked Ethan to build his product first and then we would fund. I asked him if he would consider raising $3m in stead and we would put up most of the funds.

I had previously raised VC in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2005. It included one firm who I asked not to call Salesforce.com as a reference (they were our largest pilot customer) and in their kindness they called Marc Benioff (the CEO) and asked his opinion. Another called Parker Harris, the co-founder and CTO. Tempus Fugit.

He listed all of the product releases that were up coming, the customers that were in the pipeline and where he saw his competition moving. There’s you and your killer CTO co-founder. I prefer not to do any angel investments because I focus on my VC funds but it was gratifying to write some small checks to support local teams.
