A question that I still hear debated often is whether a new online platform startup growth strategy should focus on user count or profits. Of course, growth is implied in that equation, and is also required for maintaining a sustainable competitive advantage. The challenge is not to undermine growth by a blind focus on profits.

In 2006, a passion to help startups grew into Tech Cocktail , a company whose mission was to showcased burgeoning companies in bars around the country. We had to buy Oracle database licenses, UNIX servers, a Sun Solaris operating system, web servers, load balancers, EMC storage, disk mirrors for redundancy and had to commit to a year-long hosting agreement at places such as Exodus. Linux (instead of UNIX), Apache (web server software), MySQL (instead of Oracle) and PHP. And maddening.

Their first fund was a $75 million fund raised in 2006 and they very recently announced a brand new $130 million fund. Gilt Group is currently the largest private sale web site in US. Booyah – Develops a location based service platform that pairs the virtual world with mobile gaming. Competition: McAfee , Symantec.

It's an intensely competitive market in developing games for the iPhone and other mobile platforms, with thousands and thousands of titles competing for attention from users. Crickler was originally licensed way back in 2004, because we believed in the title, but the platforms at the time couldn't handle it.
