There were startups and a software industry but barely. 2001–2007: THE BUILDING YEARS The dot com bubble had burst. SEEING THINGS FROM THE VC SIDE OF THE TABLE While I was a VC in 2007 & 2008 those were dead years because the market again evaporated due the the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). There was no money train.

In some ways having seen these trends before and being a bit more mature (code for I’m 47) I think I feel just a little bit less pressure than I did when I was younger. I spend more time an executive recruiting of key talent for portfolio companies in which I’ve invested and more time in product reviews. Year in, year out.

You can expect some strong competition, but it’s unlikely that there will be 5 great scooter companies. That’s a bit like imagining Apple launching the 2007 iPhone and then not having 10-years of constant improvements to maintain its market leadership position. One huge advantage the early-movers have is “density.”

It's an intensely competitive market in developing games for the iPhone and other mobile platforms, with thousands and thousands of titles competing for attention from users. In 2007, we tried to launch it for the iPhone web, and the platform still couldn't handle it. stars, mostly five star reviews. William Volk: It's hard.
