Our guest this week on #TWiVC was Dana Settle , partner at Greycroft Partners , a venture capital firm with offices in New York and Los Angeles. Greycroft is an early-stage VC. Closing a VC fund in 2009/10 is a major achievement in and of itself. Gilt Group is currently the largest private sale web site in US.

Many observers of the venture capital industry have questioned whether its best days are behind it. I can’t help feel a bit of rear-view mirror analysis in all of “VC model is broken” bears in our industry. They are, in fact, great news for traditional venture capitalists. The event was sold out, attracting founders, angels, VC’s and future entrepreneurs in the LA Startup Community. A total of 10 startups made up of 5 companies that received the most votes from the crowd and 5 companies chosen by the Angels and VC judges pitched in front of a live audience for a chance of winning $25,000 in funding.

First, I believe that Seesmic has an excellent product – especially the web version of their product and that having another senior and experienced exec like Loic Le Meur would be great for Twitter. This also would give the client the upper hand in discussions with advertisers, image providers, URL shorteners, etc.

I had just returned from living in Japan where I witnessed the hugely successful launch of i-mode by NTT DoCoMo so I knew the potential that the mobile web would ultimately bring, but I saw so many flaws in the launch of WAP. It required content sites to develop totally new content. I’m now a VC. There was no engagement.
