This morning's interview is with Mark Suster , a venture capitalist at GRP Partners (www.grpvc.com). GRP has just recently closed on a new $200M fund, and Mark has been one of the more active venture capitalists in the Los Angeles area in recent months. He offered it up, and they accepted it straight away.

Los Angeles-based Ad.ly , the Twitter advertising startup, is further looking to diversify its service from Twitter, saying this week that it has added support for Facebook. had added support for MySpace in June, shortly after Twitter said it would not allow other companies to automatically include advertising into Twitter.

Micro-messaging service Twitter said this morning that it is banning third-party advertising in its stream, taking direct aim at Los Angeles-based Twitter advertising service Ad.ly. is backed by GRP Partners, Greycroft Ventures, and LowerMyBills founder Matt Coffin.

side note: our last fund at GRP Partners is currently ranked as the 5th best performing fund of the year 2000. Many funds have not performed and will start to disappear. PEHub followed up their analysis with this. He then profiled his portfolio company FourSquare who started with a very small investment.

But, when it comes to tracking what ad placement or publisher was responsible for getting a consumer to pick up the phone and call, that’s pretty difficult.

We also talked about the emergence of New York City as the “hot” new area of entrepreneurship, VC and innovation driven by the quantification of the online advertising industry. Another topic we debated early in the program was “lean startup” vs. “ fat startup ” where we both took the obvious hedge and said “it depends.”
