San Diego-based Covario , a developer of search advertising and web site optimization software and services, said today that it has acquired Netconcepts, LLC , a website search engine optimization firm based in Madison, Wisconsin. Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed.

I originally came from the entreprise software world (for 10 years) and before that I was in mobile & telecoms (8 years) so the last three years of immersing myself in consumer Internet, digital media & advertisings has been very eye opening. I know the more experienced consumer web people will be laughing about now.

If you’re just a content company your advantages are too small to win on the web. Your tech needs to add value to content producers, the audience and advertisers. You have to have some of your own content formats and not just be an aggregator of talent. You must invest in technology. Take for example, an eCommerce company.

I come from a high-tech software background, and only a few years ago, it would cost at least a million dollars ($1M) for a team of professionals to produce any commercial software product. Now, with open source software components, and low-cost development tools, the same job can be done by one good hacker for a few thousand dollars.
