San Diego-based SweetLabs , the company headed by Darrius Thompson, and which runs both the OpenCandy advertising network and the desktop Pokki app platform, said today that it has raised $13M in a Series C funding round. According to the company, the new funding goes towards growing Pokki, the desktop app platform it launched in June.

We cater to mobile phone developers--right now the iPhone, and coming soon to Android. You have advertising networks and mediation players, but you don't really have an ad management platform like ours. Ad networks were springing up, but there was no infrastructure to power them. Our space is pretty young.

Their first fund was a $75 million fund raised in 2006 and they very recently announced a brand new $130 million fund. Closing a VC fund in 2009/10 is a major achievement in and of itself. In the intro section of the show we talked a lot about why VC funds are becoming smaller again and where Greycroft fits.

My firm GRP Partners recently funded a young LA based company named Ad.Ly was the “static&# web. Traditional media companies published their stories on the web. was the 2-way web. I then remember when Amazon started selling books on the web. Advertising has driven the majority of Internet innovation.

A total of 10 startups made up of 5 companies that received the most votes from the crowd and 5 companies chosen by the Angels and VC judges pitched in front of a live audience for a chance of winning $25,000 in funding. Divshot is a tool for web application developers. This will most likely take event in January 2013.

There are obvious reasons the industry has had less-than-desirable returns, including: massive over-funding of the sector, huge increases in inexperienced venture capitalists that took a decade to peter out, and the massive correction in the value of the public stock markets that closed many exit opportunities for half a decade.
