Cisco has agreed to pay $660 million for Luxtera, a Caltech spinout that makes optical chips for data centers. Cisco, the San Jose, CA-based tech giant (NASDAQ: CSCO ), said Tuesday that Luxtera’s advanced chips will help it offer its customers faster and better network service performance.

The spark for this post is that I'm going to go to Caltech/MIT Enterprise Forum on Saturday. I did a quick search and didn't find many blog posts mentioning that specific event. They really need to take a look at how Twiistup , Mixergy and others are doing to both promote and help make their events better for attendees.

In his blog he says, “I responded that I thought it was stupid. World-class education including Caltech, USC and UCLA. Home of JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory), which helps put rockets into space. Plus, he told us a little bit about how he's helping to build a mini cluster of technology companies in the Silverlake area. It's like WordPress, but instead of blogging, it provides an online community, which is self-hosted. We had to figure out what would help the other 90 percent build better and more interesting sites.

If you read this blog often you'll know that I'm a huge fan of First Round Capital. He then went on to teach Computer Science at Cornell, Caltech, and University of Pennsylvania. Through his research he helped bring ARPANET to Philadelphia in 1973. This becomes a support group and allows them to help each other succeed.
