I had a recent email dialog with the founder of a company looking for a CTO for their startup. Did they really need a Startup CTO or Developer or both? And do I fit as a Part-Time CTO , Technology Advisor , CTO Founder , Acting CTO ? He needed some kind of CTO and as well Developers.

The truth is you really don’t know how your teammates or your bosses will perform in good times and bad. You hire people who look good on paper. You join teams that got good write-ups on TechCrunch, have great VCs, have star CEO’s, whatever. Writing a book will be fun. After 6 months – you know.

The reality is that as VCs we have limited allocations of where we can spend our time so we want to attach ourselves to projects in which we, too, can be passionate. Meredith came to see me along with the CTO Marc Berte. I seldom hire patent attorneys during due diligence but this was too important.

The Internet doesn't work right, and is broken, and without a CDN, you can't do what you need to do if you're the CTO of a large website. Software-as-a-service companies write good software, and network companies build good networks, but rarely do you find both that do that well as the same time.

Sending the zeros and ones into the air was the same and sending nutrients into your mitochondria, except that at Visalus, it was not capital intensive like it was at SkyPipeline. It was really the same business, but with less capital. We hired the ex-CTO of Sears, and other senior executives out of Disney in software.
