At the CTO Group that I organize in Santa Monica, we've had lots of discussions around this. Google App Engine - take more than two seconds to process we are going to kill your request. Must be willing to work the way Google expects. Building on top of Amazon or Google - cost base is so much lower.

It is adjacent to Mountain View, home to Google. I can’t say for sure, but it feels to me like the re-urbanization of technology companies is driven by a broader trend of the tech industry overall – cloud computing. These days it’s Santa Monica and Venice. Palo Alto is home to Stanford. And Facebook.
