Jason Calacanis , the CEO of Mahalo, is planning some direct competition to Michael Arrington's technology blog empire, TechCrunch , according to a report today from the Guardian. Calacanis has reportedly set the launch of his new site, Launch--as well as an associated, TechCrunch50-like event--for February.

When I was listening, I made a point to try to do that, but when I did, I found I had to go to twenty sites to find the information I needed--whether that was to write a letter, send an email, or whatever. What really differentiates us from our competition is the data set we have. Our competition doesn't have that data.

Through advertising or direct sales, these sites harvest intent. Last week I was having coffee with an ex engineering student of mine now on his second startup (and for a change it wasn’t a Web 2.0 they released a new 2.0 At best I think business plan competitions are a waste of time. It’s also the wrong answer.

What a sweet feeling it was last week to see the launch of the photo sharing site Pose , whose application targets shoppers of apparel. I have other VCs that I love to work with but through a combination of desired geography, no known competitive investments and also Dustin’s preferences we settled on these two.

They are afraid of their competition finding out about the idea, a bigger company trying to steal it or some other entrepreneur doing it first. Well, my philosophy is that if you keep it from your competition, youre also keeping it from potential users or customers. Yes, I did say competition. with a "Feedback/Comments" button.

What if there was another competitive cash register on the market? Sure, theres a wave of new technology solutions that have come into the market that are competitive with DoubleClick, but, they are unproven. They keep 100% of the revenue from their own website and only a fraction when selling advertising on other sites.
