And I had been telling my partners for a couple of years that I thought Ethan was one of the more talented entrepreneurs I had come across in San Francisco. The company was called Red Beacon. I was standing with him when he won the TechCrunch 50 award.

Unlike most companies that filter content, we filter things based on your friends, and rather than using some algorithm, we provide you with information based on what your friends are looking at, the videos they're seeing, pictures they are enjoying, and articles they find interesting. Both have been great mentors ever since.

We spent a morning talking about the transition from being an engineer to being an entrepreneur, having the distinction of being the first digital health startup to emerge from USC Viterbi’s Startup Garage , and drilling down to what really matters in all of our entrepreneurial efforts – listening to consumers. It was really fast.

In my case, I had a mentor at the time who helped me understand how there was a parallel between the printing press and the Renaissance, and the Internet as the next step in information and communications. Plus, we were seeing things like the Arab Spring and things like that, where the free flow of information was countering tyranny.

Since then, I have worked extensively with mentoring youth, and helping them figure out what's possible in terms of careers. Then, we found the most amazing data scientist, who was initially an advisor, who was the founder of the AI Journal, and was at NASA, and taught at Stanford and USC.

We recently sat down with Luc Berlin, co-founder of Miigle, a SoCal startup that has an aggressive global mission to bring entrepreneurs together from around the world.
