I’ve been having discussions with several people recently about the role of the CTO (Chief Technology Officer) in very early stage companies. In December 2007, I described how I commonly take on an Acting CTO Role in a Start-up. That’s why Roger Smith puts the focus of the CTO on programming for the earliest stage.

I acted as the occasional mentor, advisor and coach to Ethan. And in a world where we increasingly log in to personal web time at late hours or on our mobile phones that’s no longer good enough. The company was called Red Beacon. I was standing with him when he won the TechCrunch 50 award.

I seem to encounter a lot of people who want to attach a CTO label to me as I'm the only programmer on the founding team of three. While I do fill that role at the moment, I'm a little hesitant to refer to myself as a CTO as we still haven't launched a product, acquired a single user, or turned or a penny in profit. Accounting?

One, is the discovery of awesome content, two is a place to store and publicize that awesome content, and three is being able to save your usernames and passwords to literally any site on the web, and automatically log you into those sites. And I spoke with the CTO of another great company I used to be on the board of and enlisted his support in potentially being an advisor to one company. Finally, I think it’s worth meeting “mentors.” The are at the center of a web and even being two degrees away from a super maven can help you greatly.
