Hawthorne-based SpaceX --despite a continuing string of successful launches--is cutting 10 percent of its 6,000 employees, according to a report published on Friday. The report--from the LA Times--confirmed the layoff with the company, which said that Space "must become a leaner company" to continue to deliver for its customers.

Hawthorne-based SpaceX is planning yet another launch of a Falcon 9 rocket today, this time from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. No details on the "Zuma" spacecraft have been announced by SpaceX, and the company does not even mention the company's customer for the launch.

A report today says that the hugely successful flight and mission by SpaceX may open up the doors for that firm to gain a new customer: the U.S. The report , from Reuters, says that the third successful flight by SpaceX means that the firm has met one of the first requrements to fly military satellites into space.

The award went to its healthcare division, Spacelabs Healthcare, for a patient monitoring system.
