Google has from late last year embarked on an in-house cleaning project. In November 2011, Google’s spring clean saw a number of services shut down like Knol, Friend Connect and Google Wave. Google at the moment is shutting down iGoogle, Google Video, Chatback, Google Mini, and the Symbian Search App.

Second thing that we do is encourage large organizations, companies like Google, Intel and Facebook, to invest in Tech City. An office here, in the UK, can support the West Coast of the United States in the evening and Australasia in the morning. It actually makes it a very cool place to provide technical support for a company.

Google – Based on “googol,” a term devised by mathematicians to describe inconceivably large numbers that are smaller than infinity. The term is obtusely related to Google’s quest to catalog all of the world’s information, but wholly irrelevant from a user perspective. Expertcity was a great name for that business.

This is something that Google is attempting to do with its Wave format and remains an approach to watch. End users don’t care about the technical details anyway, so there has been some interesting work on standards for social activity streams and activity stream aggregation. The standard to watch is activity strea.ms

Of course, we all love disruptive new products, like the Pebble Smart Watch and Google Glass, but recent innovative services startups, including Uber for transportation and Airbnb for lodging, have grown much bigger and faster.
