And so it goes with social networking. But AOL brought online services, email, chat and discussion boards to the masses and thus educated a generation that paved the way for others. By the mid-nineties we had the World Wide Web, which gave us a standard way to publish web pages using HTML. AOL was closed, the Internet was open.

Yet somehow, during all that time, the company has managed to communicate its goals and vision to employees in a way that makes them a part of a unified team. Takeaway: You can’t beat having team members who are pleasant and friendly to each other, and are both good at and love what they are doing. Southwest isn’t new to the game.
