And then in the late 90’s money crept in, swept in to town by public markets, instant wealth and an absurd sky-rocketing of valuations based on no reasonable metrics. Starting in 2009 I began writing checks consistently, year-in and year-out. I admit that my writing style back then was a bit more carefree, provocative and opinionated.

As a mentor to many aspiring entrepreneurs, I’m often asked what it takes to get satisfaction from this lifestyle. Put it behind you by setting your own realistic metrics for success and happiness. Then write them down. By writing these goals, you add validity to each target and create a mental desire to see them fulfilled.

Based on my own experience as a mentor and angel investor, I find that as many as ninety percent of startups fail in the first five years, despite their best efforts. Define key metrics to measure progress and success. Use comparable metrics for managing team member results. Do a written business plan to validate your thinking.

Create a written plan, with target milestones and metrics. I have found that the process of writing down your idea, with a plan for implementation, and reviewing that plan with a business advisor, will force you to learn and acknowledge the real requirements for implementation. Expand your own learning and knowledge by helping others.

As a mentor to entrepreneurs, I tend to see many of the same obstacles appearing in every new startup, and since I don’t want to appear to be a downer , I’m not sure how to properly warn people ahead of time to be on the alert for these challenges. Keep control by writing every check personally, and manage receivable and payables tightly.

He called me 15 months later excited to show me his metrics and wanted to talk about his A round. I reviewed a deal for a friend of mine tonight. But I always ask.
