In this age of millennials and social media, individual workers are more driven by the greater good, work-life balance, and peer culture, than by organizational pressures. Outsourcing and working from home needs coordination. In the early days of outsourcing, I was led to believe that it would reduce the need for local managers.

I continue to be amazed that more than a quarter of new businesses don’t even have a website , and many more don’t pay attention to social media, or monitor feedback on sites like Yelp. At minimum, that requires a modern website, and visibility on relevant social media sites, likely including Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.

Studies have shown that work productivity is related to a happier work culture , and customer satisfaction and loyalty are also dependent on the culture. The trend toward more remote work, flexible work hours, and outsourcing can eliminate productive work relationships and communication between functions.

I recommend using digital channels, including email and social media, personalized, if possible, with promotions. Outsource functions outside your core competency. I see a new resurgence of outsourcing alternatives from outside the country as well as inside, driven by freelancers caught in the squeeze.

Customers won’t pay to see your new employees learning on the job, and outsourcing the real work to a cheap labor source is a recipe for disaster. Be accessible on social media, write a blog or articles for industry publications, and participate in conference panels and speaking engagements.
