View the Slideshow A little more than a year ago, amid a resurgence in San Diego’s software sector, Xconomy identified a baker’s dozen of local tech companies to watch in 2016. I widened my net this year. I met with Seed San Diego partners Taner Halicioglu and Eric Gasser, who also reviewed the companies and provided their feedback.

This concentration is partly due to natural causes – successful startups spawn other successful startups. If the tech community believes that a certain area is the epicenter of a particular industry, motivated entrepreneurs will start their ventures in such locations, thus reinforcing the geography’s perceived advantageousness.

Exec Summary: Most companies (98+%) in the world (even tech startups) should be very profit focused. While Google and Facebook will buy “acquihires” (at least as of Dec 2011), many acquirers hate the idea of buying companies that aren’t profitable. You may have leverage when you DO need to fund raise. Operating Costs.

If Nivi ever sent me a deal I’d meet the team without any question or pre-review. Where I think Robert’s comments are slightly wrong is that AngelList is a net positive for VCs. 2011 is one big cocktail party all over again. I mostly don’t look. It has become too much noise, not enough signal. My view for VCs.

To prove that point, tonight I had the privilege of hearing him speak at Lean LA , a Los Angeles group that helps high tech start-ups build great companies on a budget. That most of our ideas will not work, but we need to review why each one failed and what we can learn from them in order to progress.
