For those unfamiliar, augmented reality (AR) refers to the use of graphical or informational overlays onto the real world to provide a mixed reality experience. Think a google maps digital overlay over a police helicopter chase video, with all visible street names and numbers on the screen. Science fiction stuff right?

But with the introduction of Apple TV, Google TV, the Boxee Box & other initiatives it’s clear that this battle will heat up in 2011. So entering 2011 why does this matter? The digital living room battle will take place over the next 5-10 years, not just the next 1-2. This is where the digital media puck is going.

We built a Proof of Concept in 2010, went into closed beta in 2011 and opened up to the public in Dec 2012. They then headed back to the USA and UK to get comment and advice on the platform, after which they returned to South Africa, made the enhancements and launched a closed beta in 2011. When was it launched?

It hadn’t occurred to me that one might wish somebody congratulations for marking the day you became independent as a nation but I guess when you think about it, if you didn’t have a cultural reference it was a pretty appropriate guess at what to say. So that’s what’s on my mind this Independence Day 2011. Congratulations, indeed!
