The most cost-effective marketing approaches have changed; from catalogs to web sites, and from television commercials to social media. Yet I still see expense budgets based on traditional channels, with no strict metrics on cost of customer acquisition by channel, or lifetime customer value. Excessive support and return activities.

This reduces the cost of customer acquisition, allows easy upgrades for service and new features, and improves customer loyalty in the face of new competitors in the market. Every new business has unexpected pivots and adjustments, and outsourcing is easier to manage. Prioritize mergers and acquisitions early.

Hiring seems to be the preferred use of seed funds (by investors and founders), whereas I'd prefer a focus on customer acquisition. They most often really just need either a Part-Time CTO or Technology Advisor , and then some combination of hiring and/or outsourcing (on-shore or off-shore).

Note: There are clearly routine tasks which can be effectively outsourced at a startup, including those which: (i) do not require a significant time investment on the part of the entrepreneur to educate the outsourcer or, (ii) no institutional knowledge is gained by the outsourcer which could be critical to the venture’s success.
