Although many are entertaining, most fail to provide entrepreneurs with a sufficient return on their time investment. Unfortunately, most business books do not offer entrepreneurs an adequate payoff. However, Guy Kawasaki’s latest book, Enchantment: The Art of Changing Hearts, Minds and Actions ( Enchantment ) is an exception.

Guy’s latest book, Enchantment , was released in March of 2011, to overwhelmingly upbeat reviews. I even plan to use it in my upcoming UC Santa Barbara Entrepreneurial Selling class. I even plan to use it in my upcoming UC Santa Barbara Entrepreneurial Selling class. It wasn’t the Guy fan base. I’d like to expand beyond that.

For new entrepreneurs and startups, I recommend an initial focus on these six steps from the very beginning to set the right culture and save the tremendous cost of a transformation and risky competitive catch-up later: Start with an overriding top-down focus on customer experience. Set the expectation for continuous improvement.

Guy Kawasaki must have had Nithin (pronounced “Neethen”) in mind when he wrote Enchantment , as his cause and his personality are both highly enchanting. Nithin’s and the class of 2010’s initial inspiration was to, “…leave a legacy behind at our school, do something different, so we would be remembered.” . Do what you love.

According to Tige Young, Founder and CEO of Tui Tai Expeditions , entrepreneurs should de-emphasize ROI and focus on a more accurate measure of wealth, Return On Life. However, his comments resonated, because his unconventional philosophy has clearly not impacted his ability to deliver his customers a world-class adventure experience.

He is a great example of…building an enchanting company.”. He overheard me talking about Steve Jobs in conjunction with the entrepreneurship class that I teach at UC Santa Barbara.
