So, here goes: Dr. Tony Karrer Over the past 15 years, Tony has been a part-time CTO for more than 30 startups. Most notably, he was the original CTO for eHarmony for its first four years making him partly responsible for more than 4% of the marriages every year. Tony has a Ph.D.

As your organization grows and you hire senior staff where you are no longer managing every employee directly the issue of how to manage people that are not your “direct&# reports arises. Dipping: As a decision maker you rely on information being passed to you by the people who report to you. Attention to detail matters.

Really, what it does is it allows a small venue--anyone with less than 500 seats--to handle everything from admissions, to reporting, to reporting, to accounting, to marketing, and customer relationships. So, I wrote the business plan and get investment behind it. For anyone that small, Ticketmaster doesn't make sense.

Our industry just took one big step towards legitimacy with the hiring of renowned media exec Ynon Kreiz to run Maker Studios. This followed an investment late last year by Time Warner in the company in a round totaling $36 million , led by Rachel Lam , head of their investment group. Silicon Valley and Who Will Win.

LPs (the people who invest in VC funds) want to know what “hot” deals you’re in. Instant growth = huge valuation from follow-on investors = big VC mark-up on our quarterly reports = LP interest. In a pool of 25-30 investments in a VC fund the goal is to have 2-3 huge outliers. “What exits have you had?”

The sales team doesn’t like me to give demos,&# I usually think to myself, “a follow up meeting probably isn’t necessary.&# Similarly if you need your CFO to walk me through your financial model you’re probably not the right investment for me. Who does finance report to? Who does sales report to?

I seem to encounter a lot of people who want to attach a CTO label to me as I'm the only programmer on the founding team of three. While I do fill that role at the moment, I'm a little hesitant to refer to myself as a CTO as we still haven't launched a product, acquired a single user, or turned or a penny in profit. Accounting?
