Pasadena-based concentrated solar energy technology developer Heliogen, a spinout of the Idealab startup incubator, has gone public via a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) deal, the company said on Wednesday. Heliogen is developing concentrated solar energy technology, aimed at replacing fossil fuels.

The Pasadena Innovation Council organized a great tech executive meeting in Pasadena on Friday. This is another good step toward pulling together the tech community in the greater Pasadena area. Ted Tekippe, CEO of Doublebeam joined us, as did Kevin Scanlon, Chairman of the Pasadena Angels. It was a great crowd.

The group said that the winners with Stanford Nitrogen Group , Greenbiotics , and Xite Solar will split the $200,000 in prize money, and also will gain access to the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator. Hawaiian firm eHale also was given a promising idea award for integrating solar cells into indoor and outdoor, home and office furniture.

And it is one of the reasons that NYC is developing a vibrant technology community. In LA companies used to be concentrated near Pasadena or in the San Fernando Valley. So we’ve seen an explosion in the number of startup companies and subsequently a huge burst in the number of incubators. I’m sure there’s a lot of truth to that.

According to NREL, it is investing $6 million under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, as part of a new PV Technology Pre-Incubator Award. The two local firms are International Solar Electric Technology , which is based in Chatsworth, and TiSol , which is based in Pasadena. READ MORE>>.
