During planning of the fifth year, Scott Kilroy from the USC LUG and Lei Zhang from the UCLA LUG approached him about throwing a joint effort; pooling their talents to put together the first SCaLE. Hosted at the USC Davidson Conference Center, it was initially a one-day event with just 20 speakers and two tracks.

Last week, Los Angeles-based Stroome (www.stroome.com), a new startup originally spawned out of a project at the USC Annenberg School of Communications, won $200,000 in the 2010 Knight News Challenge. What we've done, is we've taken technology originally developed at USC, a CIA funded project, and gained global commercial rights for the non-security sector. They want a means of representing themselves that is animated, and changeable, and actively communicates in places like MySpace, Facebook, and other social networks.
