There’s a line of thinking in Silicon Valley that you should build product businesses rather than services businesses. It’s nearly impossible to get a services company financed by VCs. Why Shouldn’t Most Services Businesses Raise VC? Why Build a Services Business in the First Place?

Jim Franklin: Sendgrid is a cloud-based email service. Sendgrid started in Summer of 2009 at TechStars in Boulder, and we've now grown dramatically to 100 employees and 60,000 customers. Explain why someone would use your service, rather than set up your own email servers? What is Sendgrid? You only pay for us after you grow.

In 2009, I got my green card and decided to move back here. It was the guy we'd outsourced as CEO. If you look at services like Twitter, there are a lot of users who don't post, but read a lot. I then went back to Europe to create a company called Fruugo, which was a big startup back in the day, in 2006 in Europe.

2009, at which point it was generating enough revenue for me to live on it full time. myself and two women who do customer service and tech support for me via phone and email. In addition, we outsource the actual production of prints to companies around the U.S. I grew it from 2007 through. That's three of us full time on.
