I recently spoke at Caltech at the Caltech / MIT Enterprise Forum on “the future of social networking,&# the 30-minute video is here and the PowerPoint presentation is here on DocStoc ). What are the big trends that will drive the next phase of social networks? And so it goes with social networking.

The USC Stevens Institute--which was founded with significant funding from Mark Stevens, the venture capitalist at Sequoia Capital who is a USC alum--said the six projects were selected from 31 proposals, which were submitted in the summer of 2011. The startup has come up with an app now fully integrated with the giant social network and can be used to comment ,like, tag, browse through events, statuses, comments or swipe through videos as you rank them relevant or unwanted without leaving Facebook. The idea was getting mature and by end of June we had the first version.

We had over 30 pitches and classic SUW team voting that followed, resulting in the final 12 most popular ideas. I’ve been a serial entrepreneur since I was in high-school and the internet was just getting started in 1996, but it wasn’t until I pitched an idea here at LASW that I really understood the power of community and team.

And it certainly seems to have worked with reports of: Branchout has seen explosive growth in January 2011, growing from 10K to 250K monthly users, with a total usership now in the hundreds of thousands. One thing I liked in the design is how they treated completion of the profile: It's now complete and you just dismiss it from that area.
