Our new customer acquisition has grown and our costs have plummeted. We are actually getting paid now to obtain customers, so our customer acquisition costs are now negative. A negative customer acquisition cost! I’m going to be using that as an example for a long time!

Right now, we have two categories, banking, where we've partnered with Neobank to provide better solutions to our audience, digital solutions which are cheaper and help them savemoney. My partner Greg Bettinelli is an avid sports fan who throughout his career has developed an expert understanding in online ticketing (at eBay has was a champion of the StubHub acquisition) and online marketing. Online games had now become a monster industry and mobile was a huge driver through casual gamers.

We break it down by a number of vertical categories, including Indulgent--all about food, wine, and alcohol; Active--outdoor athletic endeavors; and Creative, which is arts and crafts. Finally, we have an Eclectic category, which are interesting activities which don't fit into any of those other buckets.

You need to nurture non-organic growth partnerships and acquisitions to maximize your valuation. The smart ones in this category know when it’s time to bring in an outside more experienced CEO, or step aside voluntarily when investors start demanding new management disciplines and metrics.

This last category proved to be especially lucrative. The conferences also served to enhance our stature and influence within the medical device industry, which drove sales and business development partnerships. Sexy enough to garner public relations coverage and breathe new life into otherwise staid product categories.
