According to Pasadena-based green marketplace firm OnGreen , the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), UC Los Angeles (UCLA), and University of Southern California (USC) scored a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to help foster student entrepreneurs via a business plan competition run by the group called First Look West.

That's why we're hoping that bringing domain expertise and an industry network will help facilitate that process. The group is a member of the TechStars Network, and boasts a who's who of successful local CEOs and investors. Upstart LA , started by Dan Dato and Bruce Brown, is hoping to take the TechStars and Y-Combinator model to Los Angeles, and has been in the process of lining up mentors and investors to back its incubation efforts.

The most attractive thing about it was the educational value. So, we were pretty excited to educate ourselves at TechStars. The program itself is incredibly daunting initially, but it was really valuable for us, especially as an educational experience. We have some great mentors now. Fourth, is all the friends we've made.

Both Waxman and Elbaz are serial entrepreneurs, with many successes under their belt (Elbaz with Applied Semantics, which he sold to Google, Waxman with such companies as Firefly Networks, SpotRunner, and PeoplePC). There''s Caltech, the Claremont Colleges, Harvey Mudd, UCLA. We have a lot of world class universities here.

It became a theme in my keynote at Caltech on the future of social networking. Seth’s interest in helping others grew out of his lack of having a mentor. Although both parents are educators, his father a professor and his mother the Commissioner of Education in Connecticut, they did not teach him business.
