The topic is: Betting Your Company On An Internet Platform? At the CTO Group that I organize in Santa Monica, we've had lots of discussions around this. However, these platforms could be interesting for prototype and pilot solutions. The other conclusion was that you need to have a migration path from the platform.

Remember Santa Monica-based Mahalo , the startup headed by Jason Calacanis and backed by such investors as Sequoia Capital? Mahalo had initially focused on creating a human-curated search engine, but had seen some stumbles after major Google algorithm changes last year which caused a dropoff in the firm's search engine traffic.

Santa Monica-based Factual , the open dataset and API provider started by Gil Elbaz, announced this evening that it has raised $25M in a first round of funding. Factual is the latest startup of Gil Elbaz, who co-founded Applied Semantics, the firm which developed Google's AdSense product.

Unfortunately, despite the wealth of Internet based tools for email management, web-based sales management tools, and more, contact tracking has been mostly an afterthought in the Internet age. I made the point (not widely publicized) that OS4 is currently “breaking&# many applications that use ad networks that are not Apples (most notably AdMob, owned by Google). I sure hope that Apple is working with Google to make this work. Thus we see lots of movement from Google, Verizon, HTC, Dell, HP and others.
