Almost every entrepreneur and new business owner I mentor is certain that his/her idea has a very high probability of success, and all find it hard to believe that ninety percent of startups ultimately fail. Growing too fast kills many new ventures, due to staffing costs, inventory, and funding delays.

I have often thought that creative endeavors where one has a quick turn-around between idea and realization of one’s work as one of the more fulfilling experiences in life. There were startups and a software industry but barely. There was no money train. It was 1991. We still loved every moment.

In the entrepreneur world, it’s still a popular misconception that the “idea” is everything. Even though investors, like myself, have long made it clear that we invest in people, not ideas, new venture owners insist on talking about their latest “ million dollar idea ,” rather than their “ million dollar team.”

Last year I was invited by a mentor to critique his team's PowerPoint presentation. This year I'm mentoring a team all my own and enjoying it very much. However, the ideas here come from my role as a competition judge. Over the past week I've had to review these 4 business plans and fill out an evaluation form.

They can read reviews, see pictures and even talk to the family before confirming. I typed in my brothers zip code and ton of houses popped up in his area and I was able to search out on a map view. I then clicked on reviews, looked at pictures and read the owners descriptions of what they were looking for. I registered.
