I’ve had a post in my head for months – maybe longer – about the role of a CEO. It originally appeared on TechCrunch as a guest post but just in case you missed it there. My primary role was “chief psychologist&# and as I’ve learned over the past few years the same has been true as a VC. Both are basically people businesses.

All other board functions are secondary. Even venture capitalists who sit on boards where they have significant investments often forget this point. They write into their investment documents that they will occupy a seat on the board for as long as they are invested in the company, thinking of this as a protection for their investment and tool for them to influence growth.

Los Angeles-based Demand Media , the online media site run by Richard Rosenblatt, said Friday that it has updated its eHow web site, the firm's questions and answers site. Demand said that it has created a "crisp, clean" design update, and also added new content channels, a new video series, and social tools to the site. Los Angeles-based Webalo , a company which provides mobile application development tools, said this afternoon that it has raised $3M in a new funding round. The funding came from new and existing investors, including J.L. Easton Ventures, Balch Hill Capital, and others. Webalo says its software eliminates much of the coding, wating, and cost of traditional, mobile application development.

Los Angeles-based Magento , the developer of e-commerce software headed by Roy Rubin, said Wednesday that it has launched an iPhone version of its product. The firm said it has launched Magento Mobile, which allows retailers and developers to create their own, customized and branded iPhone app storefronts. San Diego-based Anametrix , a developer of cloud-based business analytics software, revealed this week via a regulatory filing that its recently announced round was worth $1.15M, part of a $2.3M fundraising effort by the company. The firm had earlier announced the funding, saying that it had added Michael Robertson, Fred Bourgeois, Neil Senturia, Eric Otterson, Gavin Mandelbaum and Laurent Asscher to its advisory board.
