In my last post I pointed out that many of the media commentators who have criticized the YouTube video network companies as not having strong businesses were mistaken. The best “MCNs” are in fact building strong technology businesses with rapid growth and strong, defensible assets. Not so fast.

People said this about Ring (which went from startup to selling to Amazon > $1 billion in around 5 years), Facebook, YouTube, Airbnb, Uber, Twitter, Instagram and many other great behemoths of the technology industry. Ah, but Bird doesn’t have network effects! You don’t “Bing” information or “Hulu and chill.” Not really.

But the latest range of streaming services also offer a lot of customization options…even if they are hidden from view. Hulu/Hulu Plus. Hulu offers current shows ASAP. Pay to Watch: If you didn’t already know, paying a few bucks more a month will get you Hulu Plus without (hardly any) commercials.
