I usually pull the old trick of answering a question with a question. My reply is usually, “is it time for you to earn or to learn?&#. Let’s face it.

Because I was the Acting CTO for eHarmony at it's start, I quite often get introduced to people who have an idea for a startup company that is based on some kind of matching algorithm. They describe the company as the eHarmony of careers, clothes, jobs, college, tutoring services, doctors, service companies, investments, etc. In fact, you can get a good idea of these various things by just searching on Google for "eHarmony of" startup.

Santa Barbara-based RingRevenue , the call tracking firm headed by former Callwave CFO Jason Spievak, has inked a deal with online marketing and affiliate firm LinkTrust, the two said today. According to the two, they have launched a new pay-per-call service which uses RingRevenue's technology. Linktrust operates an online service for affiliate tracking and lead management.

Home Sweet Home In October of 2008, I was sitting in front of Quicken about to make my mortgage payment. I looked online at Countrywide’s website and I realized I had added a ton of negatively amortized equity back into my loan over the past few years. This never mattered up until then as the house continued to grow in value way ahead of the neg-am.

This is part of my Startup Advice series of posts. I heard Bruce Dunlevie of Benchmark Capital say these words at a conference in London nearly 10 years ago. I jotted the words down (I normally pay little attention to anything said at conferences. Most of it is BS) and thought about them much over the years. I later learned that the quote was taken from somewhere else ( perhaps as early as the 13th century!

Irvine-based Projjix said today that it has launched a beta of a service to help consultants connect with potential customers. The startup, headed by Jim Hazboun, said its site will help Fortune 500/1000 companies find and engage consultants. The web site allows consultants to post information about their services and/or projects, and also allows companies to search for consultants, post projects, and more.

Pasadena-based OpenX is in a major deal with software giant Microsoft , saying today that the two are in a deal to cross-market and promote products to their publishers. OpenX said it it will become a preferred partner to publisher for enterprise ad serving, and will promote Microsoft's Content Ads monetization products, as part of a multi-year agreement.

I have nothing to sell really, just “call Make It Work when you need help with your computer and gadgets.&# But I’m not really selling a product or service. Pasadena-based Energy Innovations , a developer of concentrating solar modules, has scored a win in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, the firm announced Friday morning. Energy Innovations said it has been awarded a contract to install its systems at Masdar City, a model community of 50,000 which is being developed as a sustainable, energy independent, carbon neutral city entirely powered by renewable energy.

I spent my week applying the new skills I obtained from attending conferences, reading and engaging in Twitter activities. I literally have been switching from my Blackberry, to my iPhone, to my PC, back to the iPhone and on and on it goes. From TweetDeck to Yammer, WordPress to Twitter, Google Adwords to Yahoo Search, Facebook to LinkedIn, throw in a little AllTop, MyYahoo, Outlook, Powerpoint, Quicken (had to pay some bills)…my head is spinning.

Thousand Oaks-based Servoy , a developer of software for developing software-as-a-service applications, said Monday that it has upgraded its namesake platform. According to the company, the upgraded software includes updates such as real-time clustering, drag-and-drop support, and ability to run applications either as software-as-a-service or through on-premise deployment.

There are tons of healthcare products being developed for your mobile devices but MedApps feels that they are being developed for people that don't need them. What they have created is a dedicated device that requires no interaction on the patients' part making it totally automatic. Which I agree with, how man 70 or 80 year olds do you see walking around with an iPhone , HTC Touch Pro, Blackberry etc.

Los Angeles-based streaming media site Stickam.com announced today that it has rolled out a new service which allows its artists to create streaming media sites using their own domain names. Stickam said the service, a new level of its PayPerLive service, allows artists to create their own community powered by Stickam's back end technology. The company said the system allows artists to provide freemium, or subscription-only sites for fans.

Envolve is a very early stage start-up company based out of San Francisco with a goal to enable meaningful conversation all over the web in real-time. They do this by providing websites with a Facebook style chat system that is enabled with a small line of javascript embedded into the web-page. This gives a website a small widget on the bottom right hand corner of the page that you can enable and disable.

The latest retail e-commerce numbers from comScore came out today, with the measurement firm saying that U.S. online retail spending was down 2 percent, to $29.6 billion, from the same quarter a year ago. comScore said this is the first time on record that there has been consecutive quarters of negative e-commerce spending growth from the prior year.

Language Weaver said that its automated translation software can be used within RightNow's CX contact center agent desktop, to offer multilingual customer care.

Santa Ana-based Powerwave Technologies , a manufacturer of wireless infrastructure hardware, said WEdnesday that it has opened up a new manufacturing facility in Thailand. The firm said the new, 135,000-square foot operation is expected to initially employ 300 people, with expansion to 500 employees by the end of 2010. The facility is located in Laem Chabang in Chonburi Province, Thailand.

Intuit's Calabasas-based Digital Insight unit is expanding its offerings today, saying that it is making its online financial management solution, FinanceWorks, available to bank and credit unions who aren't using its Internet banking platform. FinanceWorks, which provides users with tools for tracking cash flow and spending, credit card sites and other bank accounts, had previously only been available to credit unions and banks using Digital Insight's banking technology.

Woodland Hills-based United Online disclosed on its quarterly earnings call late Wednesday that it is cutting 96 employees, as part of a move to increase efficiency and streamline operations at the firm. According to the firm, 71 of the employees are being cut from Classmates Media Segment, which includes Classmates.com, with the remaining 25 from its Communications Segment, which includes its dialup service.
