If your idea is so amazing that it warrants my hard-earned angel money or the money of my LP investors from our fund then why should I take a risk on you if you won’t take a risk on yourself? Partners in VC funds only wanted to fund entrepreneurs who had a certain percentage of their net worth tied up in their venture.

The VC industry grew dramatically as a result of the Internet bubble - Before the Internet bubble the people who invested in VC funds (called LPs or Limited Partners) put about $50 billion into the industry and by 2001 this had grown precipitously to around $250 billion. So the people who invest in VC funds have two problems.

The basic conclusion was that it was a bit premature if you were talking about a serious, funded start-up. Interesting term used in a ZD Net article - Platform as a Service (PaaS) Unfortunately, Peter sells the promise and ignores the reality. Some other points - LAMP,Net, Java - doesn't make much difference.

My firm GRP Partners recently funded a young LA based company named Ad.Ly Banner or AdSense style ads placed either at the top of the page or down the right hand side (often called a skyscraper) would only net Twitter money for users that log into Twitter.com. Advertising has driven the majority of Internet innovation.
