500 Startups Extends Presence To Los Angeles

Venture capital investor 500 Startups appears to be extending its presence in the Los Angeles area, with the appointment of Jess Erickson as LA Program Director at the firm. 500 Startups has not said what Erickson will focus on with the new title, however, Erickson's profile shows that she has moved from serving as Director of Diversity at 500 Startups in San Francisco, to residing in Los Angeles at the beginning of this month.

In a move which may put off the addition of high speed fiber in Los Angeles from Google indefinitely, Google said it is "pausing" the addition of Los Angeles, and the rest of its current potential cities, to its Google Fiber service. Google did not specifically address Los Angeles, which is among a number of "potential Google Fiber" cities, where it had been conducting talks with local governments and other preliminary efforts.

Los Angeles has 8 percent of all the "unicorn" companies globally, according to a new study released Wednesday by the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business. According to USC Marshall, it tallied up the numebr of startup companies with $1 billion valuations, as a measure of business activity, and found that Silicon Valley had 39 percent of Unicorns, followed by New York (9%), Beijing (6%), Los Angeles (5%), Boston (4%) and Shanghai (3%).
