You might like to think that a bunch of savvy venture capitalists saw a market niche for raising smaller funds or perhaps there was a generational shift where disgruntled junior partners spun out of bigger firms to start their own gigs. Between 1999–2005 the costs went down by 90% and between 2005–2010 they went down a further 90%.

I will argue that when the dust settles, although we will have fewer firms, each type well end up more focused on traditional stage segments that cater to the core competencies of that firm. When I built my first company starting in 1999 it cost $2.5 million in infrastructure just to get started and another $2.5 Enter Amazon.

Xdrive itself was actually a Southern California startup, and was acquired by AOL in 2005. ElephantDrive is venture backed by Intel, and uses Amazon's S3 storage service as its back end data store. America Online announced in October that it was shuttering Xdrive, and will close the service on January 12th. READ MORE>>

I believe that this is a major new area of growth & innovation for the Internet as Cloud Services start to form deeper & richer layers. You can think of even your PC as a stack in which the hardware manufacturers handled physical layers, Microsoft handled the OS layer and application companies built higher up in the stack.
