It was the first company to do “paid search&# back when Larry & Sergey were saying they would never do it. plus a large settlement on patent disputes paid from Google) so Bill did well on it. . I think everybody heard about this acquisition. Many other people over paid for Chemdex, VerticalNet, Pets.com, etc.

So he launched a company with exclusively paid search. Users would know exactly how much was paid for each click. He wanted to build direct customer relationships to get product feedback but only 2% of customers would ever return their registration cards. If it worked in the Yellow Pages, why not on the Internet?
